To reduce the distance between classical music and Broadway, between the old world and the new, between opera singing and jazz ….
Beyond the intentions, this program is first and foremost the result of an encounter between two artists : Kate Lindsey, an opera singer whose career is skyrocketing, who excels in Mozart or Purcell, but who grew up with Broadway music from Gershwin to Cole Porter ; Baptiste Trotignon, a serial award-winning jazz pianist, who shared the stage with great names like Brad Mehldau or Tom Harrell, but who was always interested in classical music and has even composed a concerto for piano and orchestra premiered by Nicholas Angelich.
Together they have contrived a program around Kurt Weill’s songs from Nanna’s Lied to Trouble Man, not forgetting the hits from The Beggars’ Opera and Lost in the stars….
For this journey in three languages (English, German, French) under the sign of jazz, Baptiste Trotignon has re-arranged the piano parts and improvised on certain songs.
The two artists also pay homage to three composers: Alma Mahler, Zemlinsky and Korngold who, like Weill, emigrated to the United States. These melodies of classical workmanship, have in common melancholia and exacerbation of feelings.
Following the example of these composers who discovered the new world, the two performers discovered each other: Kate, a classical singer who traditionally puts her singing in the service of words, and Baptiste, a jazz pianist who has rhythm in his DNA. Their understanding was immediate and their worlds enriched each other in an alchemy that results in this new project.
