The stage director who made the success of Sir of Pourceaugnac is preparing a new staging of One of the last nights of Carnival, a choral piece of Goldoni with 12 comediens and 3 musicians on stage.

Venice 1762. Rivalry between Carlo Goldoni and Count Gozzi for the rule over Venetian theatre world is beginning to feel like a war of attrition. And Goldoni, golden boy of the Serenissima has to leave town, this town that he so cherished and that for him was always the main source of inspiration. He accepts a two- year contract that the Com die des Italiens in Paris offers him. Maybe there, in Molière’s motherland, they will understand him better. So, leave it is. But he must first say farewell to his audience. Thus, Goldoni writes One of the last nights of Carnival, the last piece written and staged in Venice before leaving for France. A play offered as a farewell gift.

The action takes place at the home of Zamaria, a Venetian weaver, on the last night of Carnival that ends the theatrical season for that year. Guests arrive one after the other and assemble around a gaming table. Amongst them we find Anzoletto, a young artist who is to leave Venice for Moscow soon, on an invitation by Italian craftsmen.

So far nothing spectacular… A simple evening amongst friends where there is talk of leaving. And also of love. They play a game of cards, they dine, dance. Should one leave? Should one stay? They talk about Moscow. And suddenly Goldoni’s play seems to herald Chekhov’s theatre.
