Quatuor Zemlinsky
Since it was formed in 1994, the ZEMLINSKY QUARTET has become the archetype ensemble showing the continuity of the school and tradition of the cord quartet in Bohemia. The ensemble won first prize at the International Cord Quartet Competition of Bordeaux in 2010 bringing to a close a series of prizes obtained in Banff (Canada), the Prague Spring, in London where it won the Press prize. It also received the prize awarded by the Alexander Zemlinsky Foundation and has used the family name ever since. The quartet has been invited to perform countless tours throughout the four continents of the world. Its repertory includes over 180 scores signed by a pleiad of important composers who belong to both contemporary and Germanic and Slav traditions. From early 2007, the quartet has exclusively recorded for the French record label Praga Digitals, which has been reuniting an Oriental and Western European heritage since 1992. Their first presentation box (4 CDs) was immediately awarded a ‘Diapason d'Or' by a leading French magazine. It brings together the youthful quartets of A.Dvořák. This recording together with the ones that followed dedicated to the likes of Schubert, Zemlinsky and Mendelssohn has received an enthusiastic welcome on an international scale in the wake of its brilliant debut. Having worked with Walter Levin, founder of the Lasalle Quartet, then with Josef Klusoň, of the Pražák Quartet, the ensemble now also teaches as an in-residence quartet at the the Basle Music Academy and runs master classes destined for students of all ages. Since 2009, the ‘primarius' František Souček teaches the violin and chamber music at the Conservatory of Prague.
