Medea completes a journey that is a work of love: her nature is built on her suffering and fed on it. She chooses guilt ! Her past requires it, it is her nature. She is a barbarian who admits no authority but her own instinct, which makes her desperately latch onto the concept of freedom. Believing in her freedom, being able to choose her own destiny, to make and unmake it her her own hands, is reassuring thought to her. Her affiliation to a family group, to a class, to a nation or a religion, limits her supposed freedom, since Medea feels like a stranger in any case.
Her tragedy lies in the difficulty to remain aware of her primitive urges whilst at the same time desperately struggling to keep them from becoming rules to be obeyed! I imagine a journey around the character of Medea, surrounded by men who are Corinth’s victims.
I imagine those men dreaming of fertile wombs, of new-borns’ wails, of ribbons and trousseaus of babies to be born. I imagine the appeal of this show in a place full of grace and sounds, where the very atmosphere of the theatre underlines the dramaturgy of story. Where a mere song or silence would do as a stage set. Where Medea’s word bursts simple and clear.
