«When they leave the stage, backstage, the actors in the troupe begin their lives, again, their real lives. They are themselves again, or so they want to believe. Like every night for the past few years, it didn't go very well. They're tired, exhausted, disappointed with the life they lead, and perhaps they should give up or move to bigger cities to once again try a new adventure, without the others.
But we're celebrating an important event, and this evening is a special one. The eldest daughter of the company bosses will be getting engaged backstage to the young leading actor at the end of Act One. She will marry him, they will be theatre managers, they will perform the company repertoire, against all the odds of life, the poorly heated hotels, the small aggressive staff of the provincial village halls and the snide indifference of the public and of stupid children. Tomorrow we'll run away, but tonight we still pretend, because we don't know how to do anything else. »
