The Seagull is a comedy, writes Chekhov. A comedy in which, however, death strikes like lightning and which ends on these words: «It’s that Konstantin just killed himself ». Announced just one moment before the curtain falls, Treplev’s death will for ever remain veiled by silence and surrounded by mystery. One could say that he dies because he lost Nina for good, or because he never became the artist that he dreamed he would be. I advance a third hypothesis, that in no way excludes neither the first nor the second.

Treplev’s drama makes us think of Oedipus’ tragedy. Before Trigorin enters Arkadina’s life, Konstantin Treplev and his mother live alone. Without father. Throughout the text Chekhov insists on the great beauty of this forty-three-year-old woman, but also on her freshness. Doesn’t Dorn pretend that she looks younger than Masha who is only twenty-two? And if Treplev were in love with his mother? If he desired her? Could even his relation with Nina – who dreams of becoming the actress that Arkadina is – be viewed as a form of transfer, or a means of living the taboo and at the same time getting around it? The first aim of this adaptation of The Seagull is to explore the son/mother relationship and to write about the mad love of the son for his mother. Mad love and the pain: Treplev is not loved, or not enough, or not the way he wishes.

In this piece, Treplev’s reforming project relates to intimate feelings. For his mother in particular, and for her lover whom he envies as much as he hates.
