A theatrical work by Joël Pommerat
This Child was initiated by a call from CAF
Calvados in 2002 to collect fathers’ and mothers’ words and write a theatre show with the
theme ≪ what is it to be a parent ? ≫. This show was subsequently
presented in social centers in various neighbourhoods of Caen. We finally arrived at a text inspired by my
own vision of the subject and by texts of other authors. One or two scenes are veiled references to
people who confided in me.
This Child is a series of ten independent sequences of family confrontations that tell of a love which is not an obvious, inborn feeling, as a counterpoint to an ideal of the fantasized family.
Scenes mirror each other. It is a simple and direct text. Even though the situations can be harsh, they are played without judgment or sentimentality.
