The story of Esmeralda is well known.
Less so the story of Louise Bertin, the composer, who – with her ally Victor Hugo – captured this figure. The fate of La Esmeralda is in fact emblematic of those works which could not be viewed without prejudice in their own and subsequent eras.
Esmeralda is the name of a gypsy girl from Notre-Dame de Paris who seems to have much in common with her sister-figure Carmen: free, foreign, beautiful, murdered. The Cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris is the second principal character in this story.
La Esmeralda places us at the crossroads of the Middle Ages where the fiction takes place, the 1830s when the opera was composed and our contemporary world that the composer and the author seem to describe. Our adaptation establishes a dialogue, a resonance between these different aesthetics, symbols, issues. Narrowed down to an ensemble of five musicians playing historical instruments, the musical arrangement participates in these interrogations, allowing us to perceive the uniqueness of Louise Bertin’s composition. On stage, scaffoldings of a construction-site mingle with stones of an old building. In a space that winds, swarms with people, just as Paris did at the time Notre Dame Cathedral was constructed, it is not hard to find places to hide or to show oneself. What better place than a theatre stage to talk of what should be seen, what should be hidden, of what is public, what is private?
