With Peer Gynt I rediscover the story of incredible adventures, written as freely as a film script. It tells the saga of a young man, ambitious and egoistical, who dreams of glory, chases women, drinks excessively, abandons his beloved mother and sells his soul to the king of Trolls. Only Solveig remains faithful and pure in her love of Peer Gynt and promises to wait for him….
In his headlong rush, Peer keeps struggling with the leitmotiv « who am I ? » Even though he makes it big and seems to be able to forget his origins and accomplish his ambitions, he is incessantly haunted by painful questions: « what is the ego ? », « where lies the real I ? » Liar, dreamer, poet, insolent and anti-conformist, seducer, coward and irresponsible, Peer Gynt remains for everyone, and above all for himself, an insoluble riddle.
On second reading of Ibsen’s text, I found my initial impulse and made Peer Gynt a young musician-singer who manages to leave his home village, abandoning everyone behind on his way to become a star, a rocker in the line of Iggy Pop, in an imaginary theatrical universe, a sort of New York downtown.
