The Rebellion

≪ I write only for those affected by the soul. ≫ This is the statement of a young thirty years old author who, in 1879, dares to launch a true poetic manifesto.  With The Rebellion, Villiers de L’Isle-Adam graces us with an avant-garde play. He opens the door to a new theatre in which the heroines affirm their demands for freedom and emancipation. 
The Rebellion goes beyond the limits of a simple drama or a feminist play. We are faced here with a red-hot inferno.  In this scandalous, staggering plot, a woman decides at midnight to leave her husband, only to return four hours later when she understands that she will not have the strength to fulfill her dream : to live. 
To make Villiers de L’Isle-Adam’s voice heard today is to offer a mirror to our own captivity. It is an opportunity to address all those who are trying to listen to their inner world, to leave the world of appearances for that of being.
