Why Schubert and Ellington? Because these composers, although from different periods, have in common the fact that they knew how to compose vocal melodies of unequalled simplicity and beauty. Because to join these two great musicians in the same concert means sharing with the audience the surprising resonances that exist between their musical worlds, beyond the century that separates them. Because such association gives us a chance to rediscover certain pieces that we thought we knew.   But above all, because it is the artist’s duty to continually put himself at risk, to always shake up pre-established forms by accepting new challenges; for Louis and myself, that of being drawn into the realm of Jazz and improvisation absent in our “classical” world; for Guillaume and Thomas, that of temporarily abandoning the spontaneous musical invention in order to put their creativity in the service of a musical score.
